Cardiff Animal Hospital is pleased to offer a wide range of "holistic" modalities to help our pets lead healthier and longer lives. We provide these specific holistic modalities for our patients: veterinary acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapies, nutraceuticals, animal chiropractic care, applied kinesiology techniques, physical therapy, muscle releasing techniques, Reiki, NET (Neuro-Emotional Technique), veterinary homeopathy, and veterinary NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique). Veterinary medicine, like all professions, is rapidly changing. Additional modalities of diagnosis and therapy are emerging in both veterinary and human medicine. The populace as a whole is looking for "complementary," "alternative" or "holistic" care for themselves and for their pets. The word "holistic" means taking the whole picture of the patient, the environment, the disease pattern, the relationship of the pet with the owner, and then developing a treatment protocol using a wide range of therapies for healing the patient. |

Acupuncture is defined as the insertion of needles into specific points
on the body to cause a desired healing effect. This technique has been
used in veterinary practice in China for at least 3500 years. Acupuncture is used all over the world and is the main medical
treatment modality for 1/4 of the world's population! The primary aim of
veterinary acupuncture is to strengthen the body's immune system (to stimulate
the body's adaptive homeostatic mechanism). Modern veterinary acupuncturists use needles, electro-stimulation, heat (moxibustion), massage and low power lasers to stimulate acupuncture points. Acupuncture is indicated mainly for functional problems especially of the musculoskeletel system/nervous system, noninfectious inflammation such as allergies or asthma, and pain (e.g., vertebral disks, arthritis, muscles strains). How does acupuncture work? According to ancient Chinese medical philosophy, disease is the result of an imbalance of "qi" or "chi" (energy) in the body. Acupuncture is believed to balance this energy and, thereby, assist the body to heal disease. In Western terms, acupuncture can assist the body to heal itself by effecting certain physiological changes. For example, acupuncture can stimulate nerves, increase blood circulation, relieve muscle spasm, and cause the release of hormones, such as endorphins (one of the body's pain control chemicals) and cortisol (a natural steroid). |

Animal Chiropractic Care |
Animal chiropractic care is the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of
animals through manipulation and adjustments of all the joints in the body,
especially the joints of the spinal column. When vertebral joints are
misaligned or have restricted motion, irritation and inflammation to the nerve
root as it exits the spinal column is a common result. Accidents, trauma,
stress, overexertion, muscle weakness and even toxicity can result in subluxations/misalignments. These subluxations can cause symptoms of pain, decreased range of motion, "hunching up" of the back, fatigue or lethargy, inability to go up or down stairs, inability to get in or out of the car, tingling or numbness sensations that lead to a "lick granuloma" or non-healing sore on a leg, tilting of the head to one side or the other, chronic ear problems, anal sac problems, rear leg "dragging" or weakness, constipation, urinary leakage, etc. Chiropractic "adjustments" (we use the specific "hands-on" method of animal adjusting) can help to relieve these symptoms. Dr. Laflin also utilizes three other styles of chiropractic care to "soften" the adjustments on your pet: Applied Kinesiology, Logan Basic and Network chiropractic techniques. Dr. Laflin likes to give "homework" to her clients and sends home "how to" instruction sheets. These instruction sheets tell the client how to stretch and release their pets' tight muscles. The more a client stretches their pet, the less often they have to come in for chiropractic adjustments. In our experience, there are healing potentials achieved through chiropractic that are NOT achievable by any other forms of therapy. |

The use of specific herbs and plants for medicinal purposes has been
practiced for millennia all over the world. Herbs have healing powers that
are capable of balancing the emotional, mental and physical dimensions of
animals. Cardiff Animal Hospital, Inc has an extensive herbal and nutraceutical pharmacy to help provide our patients with the best in holistic
medical care. Nutraceutical medicine is the use of micronutrients, macronutrients and other nutritional supplements as therapeutic agents. |

Homeopathic Remedies
|
Veterinary Homeopathy is a system of medicine developed by the German
physician Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the early nineteenth century. Through
careful study of his patients, Dr. Hahnemann discovered natural laws governing
the interaction between the "vital force" of the patient, the disease,
and the medicines used to treat disease. He described three discrete
responses to medications: suppression, palliation, and cure. His central
observation, like cures like, became the cornerstone of
homeopathy. In other words, medicines causing symptoms in healthy patients
will cure those same symptoms in sick patients.
Homeopathy goes beyond simply controlling symptoms. It stimulates the body's own healing abilities and strengthens the patient. Symptoms, as signposts of a treatable internal imbalance, are important guides to the proper treatment of a patient's disease. Homeopathic remedies are made from plants, minerals, drugs, viruses, bacteria and animal substances. These remedies do NOT mask or suppress symptoms, they treat the deepest constitutional causes of the illness. Homeopathic remedies contain vibrational energy essences that match the patterns present in the diseased state within the ailing patient. |

NAET
(Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique)-Treatment Vials
|
Allergies create a major challenge to the health of many of our pets.
Allergies are understood to be an unusual sensitivity to certain
substances. An allergy may result from numerous causes, including repeated
exposure to a particularly strong or toxic allergen over a short period of time,
or from events such as serious trauma, major surgery, any anesthetic event,
vaccinations, as well as emotional stresses such as change in habitat, weaning
or change in family members (human or animal).
Through the use of this technique many "allergies" can be identified and "cleared." NAET offers the proper stimulus to the immune system to effect a cure for allergies and in many cases emotional issues (NET=Neuro-Emotional Technique) as well. With this holistic treatment modality, we have been able to effectively address (multiple treatment sessions are usually necessary) skin allergies, food allergies, chronic recurring infections, recurring GI and respiratory conditions, vaccine and drug reactions, degenerative and auto immune diseases, gingivitis, emotional and stress related behaviors, etc. |

Introduction Policy for Our First
Time Holistic Clients
|
Doctor
Laflin and the staff are pleased you are considering Holistic Medical
treatment for your pet. There are several considerations for you to
think about before the initial consultation/exam appointment can be made.
Unfortunately, Dr. Laflin's expertise and success have created a demand on her time. In order for Dr. Laflin to maintain the highest level of healthcare for your pet, she dedicates most of her time on her existing client base. This allows her to accept only a few new clients per month. This has led us to create a New Holistic Client waiting list. Unfortunately, it may involve a 9-12 month wait before your pet can be scheduled for the initial visit . If this waiting time is acceptable to you, please phone the office (760-436-3215) and have the Reception staff place you on the New Holistic Client waiting list. After being placed on the list, you will be contacted when the next available New Holistic Client appointment is available. The initial holistic medical examination and evaluation is a time of history taking, compiling a list of patient complaints/problems and then deciding what our mutual goals will be. The time frame for the first visit will take approximately 2-4 hours to complete, depending on what modalities you want performed on your pet. The cost of the initial exam is $300.00 plus any other treatment fees for: chiropractic care, acupuncture treatments, NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique), NET (Neuro-Emotional Technique), Reiki/Energy work, homeopathy, or the dispensing of the appropriate herbal formulas/nutraceuticals that are deemed necessary for your pet. Due to the length of the initial appointment, a deposit is required. The deposit of $300.00 is due 14 days prior to the scheduled appointment date. It will be necessary for us to cancel your scheduled appointment if your deposit is not received by the due date. Please review the following sample of possible costs that may be incurred during your first visit with Dr. Laflin.
Follow up sessions for current patients are usually 1-1 1/2 hours long and may cost between $85.00 and $290.00 based on the following price list:
Note: If your pet has not been seen by Dr. Laflin in over two years, we will need to set up a reassessment examination for your pet. Please set aside 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours. The reassessment exam is $210.00 and this full amount is due as a deposit 1 week prior to the appointment.
Upon making the initial appointment with Dr. Laflin, the staff will mail you a packet of information...much of what is printed here. In addition, there will be several patient medical history forms and requests for past medical records. It would expedite matters greatly if you would MAIL, FAX, or DELIVER the following prior to your appointment:
